Why do we say hello to answer the phone

The choice is largely arbitrary and was much discussed when the telephone was invented. Alexander Graham Bell, considered inventor of the telephone in the USA, proposed "Ahoy" while Thomas Edison is said to have coined "hello".  Other candidates included Bell Labs "What is Wanted?""Are you there" and "Are you ready to talk".

Not surprisingly "hello" is the one that caught on and all the others disappeared, in English-speaking countries at least. The same process occurred in other countries with differing results. In Italian, for example, they say "pronto", meaning "ready".

Authoritative sources are hard to come by, but the New York Times published an interesting article on the subject in 1992: Great 'Hello' Mystery Is Solved.
